A terrorist act targeting Masjid-al-Haram (Makkah) was successfully countered by Saudi forces on June 23, 2017.
Reports have revealed that a suicide bomber was hiding in a house in the Ajyad neighbourhood of Makkah. Security forces surrounded his house after receiving some intelligence information regarding him. He opened direct fire on the security officials until he blew himself up causing the collapse of the building he was residing in.
Six people from the general public were injured and five members of the security forces were slightly injured. Five people have been arrested during the clampdown and are currently under investigation.
Security forces had recently found two terrorist groups in Makkah and a third group in the city of Jeddah. The thwarted attack had targeted worshippers at the mosque. The first operation was foiled in Makkah in Assila District, while the second was thwarted in Ajyad Al Masafi neighbourhood. It is believed that the operation started in Ajyad based upon the information they received from the other two operations.
Gulf News has reported that the gunmen, who were wanted for terrorism, exchanged fire with the security forces who surrounded one of the buildings in the Al-Aseelah neighbourhood in Makkah, where the militants were hiding. Six people were injured in the clashes as well as five security force members.
A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said, ”It is believed the gunfire was mere meters away from the Mosque (Masjid-al-Haram) itself in Ajyad.”
