The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday has taken down information minister, Maryam Aurangzeb, from the search committee established to select an appropriate person as the head of PEMRA.
A three-member bench led by Chief Justice (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar issued the order during the hearing of the case about the media commission.
“Minister, Maryam Aurangzeb, must be busy in giving remarks and repeatedly criticizing judiciary’s decision against her leader Nawaz Shharif,” CJP observed.
During the hearing, the apex court observed that the freedom of press is connected with Judiciary.
Additional Attorney General (AAG), Rana Waqar, informed the court that the government has formed a seven-member committee which will include prominent journalists and also the chairman of the Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA). The committee will form a three member panel to select the Pemra Chhairman.
During the hearing, CJP further observed that anti-judiciary slogans were chanted outside accountability court on Friday.
“I don’t know any ‘lion’, actual lions are my judges,” CJP stated while pointing towards the other judges present in the court. Important to note there that he s referring to the electoral sign of PML-N, lion.
The CJP further remarked that PML-N leaders are not brave enough to face the media and courts, and seek escapes behind females and anti-judiciary slogans. The case will be resumed in two weeks.
