Roughneck lawyers go on rampage in LHC

Roughneck lawyers turned the premises of Lahore High Court into a battleground against the larger bench’s order to arrest Sher Zaman Qureshi, president Multan High Court Bar on Monday.

Lawyers set new examples of creating ruckus in the LHC and also on The Mall. The entire brawl started following the arrest orders of Multan High Court president. Lawyers broke the main gate of the court. The court issued non-bailable arrest warrants of Sher Zaman.

The lawyers went frenzied at GPO Chowk. Skirmishes continued between the police and the lawyers as police also fired tear gas and used water cannon to disperse them.

Five judges of the LHC bench, chaired by Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, heard the contempt of court case of Multan Bar against Sher Zaman.

Meanwhile, as soon as the court issued the arrest order of Zaman for not appearing before the court, the lawyers went on the rampage. The licenses of Sher Zaman and Qaiser Kazmi have also been suspended for disrespecting the judge of Multan bench. The hearing has been adjourned till August 22 (tomorrow). Earlier, the court summoned two lawyers including Sher Zaman. Strict security arrangements were put in place on the occasion.

Lawyers also manhandled the on-duty police personnel at the court premises.

On July 24, Zaman misbehaved with Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan in Multan during the court proceedings.

The LHC chief justice called back the judges from the Multan bench by exercising his constitutional powers, but keeps the LHC’s principal seat intact, i.e. Lahore and the Bahawalpur bench for the dispensation of justice. Lawyers are still protesting and on strike despite the fact that the Multan bench was restored after a few days.
