Ahmedabad: Four members of the Rashtriya Dalit Mahasangh were involved in damaging the Khanderi Cricket Stadium pitch in Rajkot to submit the protest holding of IPL matches given the severe water crisis in the city and the entire Saurashtra region.
According to the Police, who said that the members of a specific organization named as ”Dalit organization” entered the cricket stadium, owned by Saurashtra Cricket Association, with an intention to damage the pitch. They were, luckily, immediately spotted by the officials and they were ousted from the ground.
Then the officials later called in the police which positioned a team of State Reserve Police to guard the stadium. Though no arrests were made, the security in the area has been tightened.
Niranjan Shah, the secretary of SCA, says that it was led by a local party, and they were attempting to do so to protest the use of water in preparing the pitches. “This is going overboard now. Every day, there is some new agitation that is taking place and cricket is becoming its target,” Shah said.
This incident occurred after the wake of former Bharatiya Janata Party president of the Mahasangh Siddharth Parmar staging a demonstration and 48-hour fast outside the SCA Stadium to protest against the tournament being held in Rajkot.
It was staged to highlight the drought-like situation prevailing in the region.
Leader Mahasangh wants the matches shifted to the venue outside Gujarat and SCA to adopt villages affected by water scarcity or supply water to these villages using the SCA pump.
Security has been beefed up around the stadium following the incident.
