PEMRA fines Geo News and Hum TV

Islamabad: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has imposed fine of Rs.1 million on Geo News and Hum TV for airing objectionable content in their programs.

According to the press release of electronic media regulatory authority, after a large number of complaints from the general public, a show-cause notice was sent to M/s Eye Television Network (Pvt.) Ltd. ( Hum TV) on February 20, 2017, seeking an explanation within seven days.

After hearing the stance of Hum TV’s representative the decision of fine was taken by PEMRA.

The channel aired an episode titled Chew Gum for its drama series “Kitni Girhein Baqi Hein” having an objectionable content. Following it a show-cause notice was sent to Hum TV.

After hearing the TV’s representatives, reviewing the complaints and objectionable clips and analyzing their written reply, the committee unanimously agreed that the content was in violation of the clauses 3(1)(a), 3(1)(e), 12 and 17 of the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct, 2015.

“The channel was also warned to be more vigilant on the selection of the theme of its dramas/soaps, keeping in view the provisions of Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct 2015, socio-cultural norms and values of the country,” the statement added.

Notice to Geo News

The electronic media regulatory authority has also put five-day ban on Geo News morning show Geo Pakistan for airing indecent content in the program. Fine of Rs1 million was also imposed.


PEMRA has prohibited the Morning Show titled “Geo Pakistan” from broadcasting or re-broadcasting, fresh, old or repeat on Geo News for a period of five (05) days starting from Monday 9:00 am on April 3, 2017 till April, 2017 12:00 am,” the press release read.
