Pakistan’s athletics community is bearing a big loss as on Saturday sprinter Nadia Nazeer and her son were killed in a car accident.
Wapda athlete Nadia, who has bagged several medals for Pakistan at international level and holds several national records, was on her way to Sahiwal with her family when her car collided with a trailer near Bahawalnagar.
Her five year old son died on the spot while she passed away later on. Her husband is critically injured.
Nadia had been training diligently to participate in the upcoming National Athletics Championship before her demise. Pakistan Sports Board and Athletics Federation have expressed their grief at the unfortunate accident, while Wapda has declared a day of mourning in Nadia’s remembrance.
It is sad to know that this is second woman athlete who passed away in road accident, last year footballer Shahlyla Baloch also lost her life in a car accident in Karachi.
Nadia was heading back to Sahiwal from a wedding ceremony with her husband and son when their car was hit by a speeding trailer at Chishtian Road near Ada Amin Kot.
She holds the distinction of winning five bronze medals in international 400 metre sprints.
Rest in peace Nadia and her child!
