Karachi: According to the sources, Waseem Akhtar of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has been elected as the new mayor of Karachi; he is presently in prison due to cases registered against him.

Voting time got over at 5pm to elect mayor, deputy mayor, chairman and vice chairman of local councils across Sindh province.

The polling started at 9am and ended at 5pm without any pause.

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has won the first position in local body institutions elections while alliance was being made for the second position.

The political parties had made alliances without considering the provincial and federal chapters of their respective parties.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz contested the local body elections as the opponent of MQM but for the slot of chairman and vice chairman, the PMLN had made alliance with MQM.

Here, the Pakistan Peoples Party got second while PMLN got the third position.
