Kulsoom Nawaz departs for London before acceptance of nomination papers

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) candidate for NA-120 by-election and the wife of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, departed for London today.

Kulsoom Nawaz left for London via PK757 flight. She will undergo a medical checkup there and will return to Lahore on September 24, sources said.

A copy of Kulsoom Nawaz’ ticket shows that the former First Lady would be returning to the country on September 24, whereas the by-elections for NA-120 are scheduled to be held on September 17.

Today is the last day for scrutiny of nomination papers.

On the other hand, ECP officials say that personal appearance of the candidate is not mandatory for scrutiny of the papers, instead, the candidate can sent someone with his/her authority letter.

Kulsoom Nawaz’s nomination papers were challenged by Awami Tehreek’s Ishtiaq Chaudhry and Pakistan People’s Party candidate Faisal Mir, who filed the objections with the returning officer claiming that though Kulsoom disclosed her Iqama [foreign work contract] in the nomination papers, she failed to disclose the salary received through the contract.

Meanwhile, nomination papers of PTI candidate Yasmin Rashid were accepted by the ECP as she appeared before the commission.
