On Wednesday, a spectacular bill has been passed in provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa aiming to ban dowry.
According to this bill of “the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Dowry, Bridal Gift and Marriage Functions Restriction Act, 2017”, bride’s family would not make any payment for dowry to the groom’s family.
It is now illegal in the province for anyone from groom’s side to ask for dowry from bride’s family. If they still force bride’s family, they shall be liable to a two-month prison term and a fine of Rs300,000 or both.
The bill also binds family to give share to female members in inheritance.
This bill also binds families not to spend above Rs75000 in terms of marriage expenses including ceremonies of walima and barat whereas maximum amount of gift given to bride by her parents, family members or other relatives can’t exceed Rs10000 mark.
Valima ceremony would arrange only one dish, banquet of rice, gravy and sweets according to this bill.
Well, undoubtedly this is a great step and awareness to make marriages simple and easy, specifically for bride’s family which sometimes suffers due to high expenses.
