Ilhan Omar is a Somalian/American politician from Minnesota. Once a refugee, she’s the first Somali-American Muslim woman legislator in America.
Alongside Ilhan, Rashida Tlaib was taking part in Ilhan’s election campaign as well and won election in Michigan becoming the first Palestinian-American and Muslim woman in congress.
Ilhan is making history not only because of her faith but the fact that being a refugee herself she was able to obtain this position, while refugees today are being banned or are not being given enough opportunities. Challenging all boundaries and limits her gender didn’t stop her from serving the community and achieving her aims.
Women all over the world and from any religious background, can learn from the victory of Ilhan that no woman is less in capabilities, no job is gender specific and faith cannot come in between serving the society and doing a job.
On winning Omar said “we get what we organise for”.
Moreover, Ilhan tweeted that “We started this campaign to prove people are ready and willing to fight for an America that works for all of us”. It shows Americans want change and encourage tolerance unlike Trump’s zero tolerance policies. Her win definitely proves to everyone that it’s not about religion and gender but the beliefs, such as achieving a democratic and just society in her case.
Women and Muslim community all over the world can feel empowered through the win. Not only did she face all the challenges and won, she made sure to leave an impact on audiences which may be another reason for her astounding victory.
In a world where women empowerment lacks behind and women still face belittlement in politics and leadership roles, Ilhan Omar has set an example for all women to follow.
Even though voting rights to females were given ages ago in most areas, but to this day, female representation in politics is far behind.
Politics is still dominated by males however due to increase in gender equality awareness, women have stepped up and they are now taking control of their lives as well as other fields.
Encouraging women around the globe, Omar claimed that “I believe women and minorities often wait for permission to do something; we need to stop doing that”. Hence, no one can stop minorities and females for standing up for themselves, giving themselves the permissions and attaining what they want.
US president Trump who is said to be anti-Muslim and that he is against minorities( because of the bans he placed on various Muslim majority countries and refugees), it is a positive answer to him and other anti-Muslim theorists too.
Ilhan Omar faced difficulties since a child as a refugee, but her race, religion, gender and background didn’t stop and hinder her progress. Motivating minorities and females to follow her path, hopefully she will be able to further bring change and betterment for all.
