Doha: Qatar’s former ameer Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani has died at the age of 84, the Emiri Diwan announced tonight.
The sources have reported that three days of national mourning will be observed in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad, who was the grandfather of the current Ameer.
Meanwhile, any special events are likely to be canceled and flags would fly at half-mast on public buildings.
However, schools and workplaces would likely remain open as normal, as they did when three days of mourning was declared after Saudi Arabia’s king died last year.
In its statement, the Diwan said:
“May Allah have mercy on his soul and make his residence paradise, and grant him the best reward for what he achieved to his homeland and nation. HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani ordered three days of public mourning across the country.”
The sources did not give any further details about the circumstances of the former ameer’s death. Funeral prayers are expected to be held tomorrow, it has been reported.
