Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has placed an order to purchase 150 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to use them on trial bases in bye-election to test their results before moving towards bulk purchase.
This initiative is taken by ECP to equip itself with modern facilities of electronic voting systems. For this purpose, it signed an agreement with M/s Smartmatic International Holding.
“An international tender was floated to acquire Electronic Voting Machines EVMs and Biometric Verification Machines BVMs last year; six vendors of EVMs and five vendors of BVMs participated during the bidding process,” reads press release of ECP.
It further states that three firms of EVMs were qualified among which M/s Smartmatic finally won.
ECP spokesperson said that all the stakeholders like voters, parliamentarians, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), media, civil society organizations, observers and the general public will be asked to observe testing of machines to attain aspect of inclusiveness and mutual consensus.
