Death toll rises to 17 in Layyah toxic sweet incident

Layyah: At least 17 persons, including five brothers, died after they had poisonous sweets in on Thursday.

The tragic incident took place when a resident of Chak No-105 TDA namely Umar Hayat brought sweets from shop owned by Tariq Mahmood and Khalid Mahmood located at Chowk-111 Morh Toil-Indus on the birth of his grandson and distributed it among the people of the area.

As a result, about nine persons including five brothers Shahbaz, Irfan, Ramzan, Sikandar and another besides this Abdul Ghafoor, Muhammad Ameer and two kids Khizar and Hafeez died on Thursday.

While Rescue 1122 shifted nine persons to District Headquarters Hospital Layyah included Danish, Deeba, Saima, Razia, Ghulam Murtaza, Javaid, Mushtaq Ali, Shaista and Nasira Bibi.

Police have launched an investigation in the matter.

EDO Health Dr Amir Abdullah stated that the shop was sealed while samples of food were taken for tests. A complaint was lodged against the seller, he added.
