It is true that women are bit weaker than men, emotionally physically and sometimes financially too. But in Pakistan women are not only subjected to financial discrimination, but they are also victims of inhuman customs.
In rural areas they are forced to work too. They are there just to obey their fathers, brothers and husbands even in negative acts. They do not have the right to decide about themselves because women are considered as foolish creatures according to the dominant social and cultural norms.
It is also sad that mostly women can not even take decisions about their lives and marriage is also a sort of trade between different families both in the rural and urban areas. They are highly vulnerable to violation of their rights to life.
Yes women should be modest, respectful and there is not ambiguity in it but in Pakistan a woman’s right to liberty is restricted in the name of modesty, protection and prevention of immoral activity.
In rural areas 90% of women work in the fields. They work for the whole day with their male family members, but they still have to face their wrath. Male family members keep a strict eye on the female family members in the name of “honour”. Our society needs to understand the meaning of word “honour”.
Sorry, Karo Kari(Honour Killing) in punishment of love marriage is not the true meaning of this word.
Many of the cases of Karo Kari are related to love marriage. A woman with her little child of five months, husband and four other members of her in-laws, was killed because she had committed the crime of love marriage. Most of the women in Pakistan are not allowed to marry a person of their choice.
In Punjab husbands subject 82% of women to domestic violence. The incidents of wife-battering is so common that it is not even recognised as a pernicious form of violence against women. Even in the cases where women receive serious injuries and want to file complaints, they are advised by the police to reconcile with their husbands, as any matrimonial dispute would bring dishonour to them.
Actually problem starts from her childhood when she is not allowed to play games, seek knowledge and she is stopped being herself by telling her that she is weak and she is not a boy so she needs to behave. This way she lacks intelligence and losses confidence sometimes; she can not take decisions and she does not even raise her voice in response to domestic violence. Because her confidence was not built properly.
Sexual assault on women, including rape, remains one of the most common crimes. The Human Rights Commission estimated that rape occurs every three hours. No estimate, however, can be made of the numerous cases that go unreported.
She is not safe in office, Collage, University, streets, roads, markets, over all no where…
If the women victimized by the offenders contact the law (the police) and the other investigating agencies, the women of the oppressed classes are subject to police brutality and crimes like rape are often carried out while in custody.
Marriage to the Holy Quran (the holy book of Islam) is also common in Sindh. Under this law a woman has to live without a husband throughout her life. For this purpose Allah blessed us with His Holy Book? Instead, it would be better for the rights of women if we read this Quran properly.
Actually this law is only applied among the class of landlords. They use this only to keep and grab the land of their sisters and daughters.
Being Muslim we believe that yes Allah has given a bit higher position to men over women,,but no He did not give any right to men to exploit the woman or to use his rights for negative purposes.
The domestic labour of women, looking after the children, cleaning the house, cooking, washing and the many other forms of labour in which women are involved is a full day’s work. But this system does not reward this human labour. Woman does not need anything sometimes except respect and worth.
The pressures upon women further diminish their will, confidence, and determination. These reactionary periods developed a defeatist psychology amongst women. To abide by the ethics of this society, they are lured into behaving as commodities with excessive use of cosmetics and make-up, with a lust for jewelry and a psychology of decoration.
Dear society! Woman is not a show piece, please try not to judge her by her dressing, make over, looks and jewelry. Our so many precious sisters are over aged and yet not married because they are not pretty according to man’s scale or they can not bring huge dowry to decorate his house. This is a sad and cruel face of our modern society.
If woman is single parent, oh yes she might be an open invitation in the eyes of men. Although she may be fighting and surviving her life but yes society does not allow her to live in peace.
A woman should opt modesty, respect and should never forget the limits being a woman, being a different creature than man but yes being different does not mean that men and society has right to surpass her.
She has right to live her life, right to take her own decisions, right to seek knowledge, to work, to be herself!
