A suspected suicide bomber shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ and triggered an explosive vest at Brussels Central Station at 9 pm, June 20.
According to media reports, he was gunned down and killed by soldiers almost immediately.
Witnesses claimed that the suspect was wearing a rucksack packed with explosives whereas it later came out that he tried to blow up a trolley or a suitcase.
Nearby shops and restaurants started shutting down as tourists fled in panic and distress.
Train passengers who were extremely terrified because of the horrific attack ran towards the tracks to avoid the blast.
The Grand Palace, the city’s most popular Tourist spot, was completely evacuated because of the possibility that the man might not be working alone.
A source said, ‘The attacker was shot several times, and it appears that he triggered a device.’
A witness added, The suspect shouted out “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) before causing the explosion.
A railway sorting agent, Nicolas Van Herrewegen, claimed, ‘I went down to the mezzanine level, someone was shouting. Then he cried ‘Allahu Akbar’, and he blew up a trolley.’
Local Media reports have suggested that the suspect was in a very confused state, unable to decide which one to blow first, a trolley or a suitcase.
One witness described on social media how he felt about the attack. He claimed that he was ‘lucky to still be alive’.
One witness told the local media that the bomber blew up a trolley, but the passengers were a several metres away so no one got hurt.
Soldiers were instructed to shoot the suspect dead on sight. Before shooting him to death, they saw a number of wires protruding from the man’s clothes as he stood before them.
Belgian Police has confirmed that everything is under control now and no casualties have occurred.
At the moment, the police and other security department workers are in numbers at Brussels Central Station to ensure the safety of the public after the horrific attack.
