Attack on Shiite mosque in Saudi Arabia

DUBAI: On Friday, three people were killed in an attack on a Shia mosque in al-Ahsa located in east Saudi Arabia killed three people. The news was reported by Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television.

Al-Arabiya television also stated that the alleged persons involved in the attack have been arrested.

Earlier, the witness of the incident told Reuters that an explosion was followed by gun attack on Imam Rida Mosque in the town of Mahasen in al-Ahsa which is located in region of the Eastern Province.

According to the residents, security forces were exchanging gunfire with five “terrorists” who carried on the attack.

The information was passed on by Mohammed al-Nimr who gave his statement to the Associated Press regarding the attack which struck the mosque during Friday prayers.

Mohammad Al-Nimr, who is the brother of the executed cleric, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr also stated that the security forces and ambulances were quick and diligent in surrounding the mosque.

The Saudi state media was not immediate in reporting the attack to the public.

After the execution of the prominent Shia cleric in Saudi Arabia, it was suspected that there would be such targets made in order to flare up the incident of Shia/Sunni sect.

Formal announcement of the casualties is yet to be made by the government.
