Asif Hashmi, Ex-ETPB Chairman, Arrested from Supreme Court

Ex- chairperson of Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) and PPP leader, Asif Hashmi, has been detained from the premises of Supreme Court today. Hashmi, who is a leader of Pakistan Peoples Party, rendered his services as the chairperson of ETPB from 2007 and 2013.He left for Dubai in 2016.

As the hearing continued, Chief Justice, Mian Saqib Nisar, asked Hashmi’s lawyer about his presence. Upon confirmation of his presence in court, Chief Justice ordered Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) to arrest him with immediate effect.

Asif Hashmi was sent back to Pakistan earlier this month to face charges of financial embezzlement in the Supreme Court after staying in custody of the Dubai police officials since 2016.

Consulate General of Pakistan in Dubai arranged the essential papers so that he could fly back to Pakistan as the case was in proceeding in the Supreme Court.

Hashmi is a suspect of embezzling approximately Rs.1.5 billion in an ETPB deal.

Worth noticing here that Asif Hashmi purportedly sold the ETPB’s 1,946 Kanals of land to DHA on 25 per cent immunity basis in 2009, however the same land was endorsed by former ETPB chairman, General Zulfiqar Ali Khan, on the grounds of 33 per cent exemption to DHA in 2001.
