Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s in-law Mohammad Farid shot dead in Peshawar

A close aide and relative of Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar has been shot and killed in Peshawar, said a police officer on Tuesday.

Agencies reported that Haji Mohammad Farid’s dead body was found on Tuesday outside a mosque on the outskirts of the city of Peshawar.

Haji Muhammad Farid was an important figure in Afghanistan’s Hizb-e-Islami party.

Farid, who long served as a Hekmatyar’s personal secretary, is also the warlord’s in-law; his daughter is married to the Hekmatyar’s son.
He had recently returned from Afghanistan.Hailing from Kunduz, Fareed was based in Peshawar for the past decade with his family.

Fareed was returning home from a mosque in the Taj Abad area of Peshawar when the gunmen opened fire, “He died on the spot and the assailants made their good escape on motorcycles,” Peshawar police officer Shahid Ahmad said.

No group or individual has so far claimed responsibility for the attack. Hekmatyar has rivalries with multiple Afghan militant groups. He recently signed a peace deal with Kabul.

This is not the first time a member of the anti-government armed group or those who have joined peace has been shot dead by unknown gunmen in Pakistan.
