At least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured after a van rammed into pedestrians in Barcelona before two men barged into a restaurant with guns.
The attack occurred at the Las Ramblas, a busy tree-lined promenade in the centre of the city, reported Daily Mail.
Gunfire was heard at the Corte Ingles store in the area after police announced a ‘massive crash’. Police officers were said to be negotiating with two attackers in a Turkish restaurant where they have taken the hostages. Police are also searching for a second van the attackers may have hired as a getaway vehicle.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing people running away and screaming after the attack happened.
A witness described the attacker as about 5ft 6in tall who was wearing a blue and white striped top. Another witness, Isaac, said: “The person was accelerating. We saw the van passing by running people over at 50 miles an hour. It was as if it was driving through a field of corn.”
Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy said he is in contact with all emergency services. Armed police personnel have also been seen rushing into the area while emergency services have asked to close the Metro and train stations in the city.
