England all-rounder Kevin Pietersen had to be helped from the field after facing just one ball of Rising Pune Supergiants’ defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore on Friday evening. Will be out of action until November after tearing a calf muscle while playing in the Indian Premier League.
Speaking about Pietersen’s injury on Friday, Pune skipper MS Dhoni admitted it may be a “blessing in disguise” as it would allow him to bring another all-rounder into his side and improve their bowling.
KP’s injury can be a blessing in disguise. We are playing with six bowlers, yet our death bowling is not great. Maybe we can look to bring in Albie Morkel or Mitch Marsh in the next game.
The ex-England star underwent a scan on Saturday when it was confirmed he will miss the rest of the IPL season as well as the Caribbean Premier League this summer.
Pietersen was signed by Pune for £355,562 in February’s player auction after an impressive stint in Australia where he reached the final of the Big Bash with the Melbourne Stars.
However, after 73 runs in four innings for Pune, he will take seven months off before a probable return in South Africa’s Ram Slam tournament in which he represented the Natal-based Dolphins franchise in 2015.
Pietersen has not played for England since their 5-0 defeat in the 2013-14 Ashes series in Australia.
