The Syrian troops identified around 45 bodies so far in a mass grave that was discovered in city of Palmyra after it was reclaimed from IS, reported a military source.
The Syrian govt. forces who were assisted by the heavy Russian air support drove IS out of Palmyra last Sunday, imposing what the army had called a mortal blow to the militants who dynamited the city’s ancient temples.
The joint grave, on north-eastern edge of the city of Palmyra, is the only one that is discovered in the city so far by the Syrian forces, said the source.
It held the bodies of both the Syrian Army members and the civilians who were captured by IS (Islamic State).
SANA, the Syrian state news agency said on Friday that the grave contained many children & women and IS had beheaded some of the bodies.
Last year, in May, Islamic State took over Palmyra. The Syrian state media reported that the hard-line Islamist militants had killed at least 400 people in the first 4 days of their control.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that monitors the 5-year-old Syrian conflict through a setup of sources on ground stated that IS (Islamic State) had slain a number of people at earlier time & had buried them on the outskirts of the city of Palmyra.
The Syrian Observatory also reported on Saturday that the combat between Syrian forces & Islamic State (IS) around Qaryatain to the west of the city of Palmyra.
It also reported that Syrian & Russian air strikes in the same area & to the east of Palmyra around the town of Sukhna.
The Attacks by the govt. forces against IS (Islamic State) positions to around Palmyra are intended at moving east across the desert to IS-held Deir al-Zor nearby the Iraqi border, said Bashar al-Assad – The Syrian President.
