NEW DELHI: Sri Lanka pace spearhead Lasith Malinga has been ruled out of the ongoing Indian Premier League after his franchise, Mumbai Indians’ medical team found him unfit for at least another four months because of a recurring knee injury.

The 32-year-old fast bowler was known as one of the deadliest bowlers in limited overs cricket, hurt his knee against West Indies last year.

Since, the recovery from injury has been slow, which also results as forcing Malinga to hand over the 20-over captaincy to Angelo Mathews on the edge of the World T20 and then also miss the tournament as Sri Lanka’s failed to defend a title.

Mumbai Indians fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been ruled out of the Indian Premier League season with a knee injury.

Mumbai confirmed the news on Twitter, explaining that the Sri Lankan speedster had not overcome the injury as expected and would take no part in the tournament.

Sri Lanka Cricket said Malinga would be assessed by a panel of doctors who would determine if he needed surgery.

Malinga could miss Sri Lanka’s forthcoming tour of England as well as their home limited-overs series against Australia in August, leaving his future at the top level clouded.

Malinga retired from Test cricket in 2010 at the age of 27 after a similar injury to his right knee ruled him out for 18 months two years back.

Sri Lankan former skipper and the fast bowler has taken 470 wickets for Sri Lanka in his 12-year career and played a key role in guiding his country to the 2014 World T20 title in Bangladesh.
