IT guy ‘deletes entire company’ with wrong bit of code

An unfortunate man deleted his entire company as well the websites of his customers also just by typing a wrong bit of code.

Marco Marsala had been running the web hosting company with more than 1,535 clients and that looks after the servers as well as internet connections on which, the files of the websites were stored.

On a server experts forum, ‘Server Fault’, he wrote about the incident, “I accidentally ran, on all servers, a Bash script with a rm -rf {foo}/{bar} with those variables undefined due to a bug in the code above this line.”

He said, “I run a small hosting provider with more or less 1,535 customers and I use Ansible to automate some operations to be run on all servers.”

He added, “All servers got deleted and the offsite backups too because the remote storage was mounted just before by the same script (that is a backup maintenance script).”

The mistake was so unlucky that even the backups were deleted too.

The response he gained was, “If you really don’t have any backups I am sorry to say but you just nuked your entire company.”

Moreover, Andre Borie wrote, “If you really don’t have any backups, I am sorry to say but you just nuked your entire company.”

It is, undoubtedly, a huge disaster for the owner of the company as well as the owners of the companies  whose websites were being run by the company.
