All of us still remember the day 22nd June 2016 when a tragic news hit us hard revealing that the famous qawwal Amjad Sabri has been shot dead in Karachi. The news spread like wild fire in the forest and there was not a single person who didn’t have a heavy heart and tears in his eyes that day. It was truly heart breaking to see an end of a legacy in such a brutal way. Everyone expressed love and condemned the cruel attack that took the great legend away from us.
Amjad Sabri belonged to the popular Sabri family who had been famous for their amazing and heart-warming qawwalis like bhar dey jholi and tajdar e haram. Amjad Sabri started learning the art of qawwali at the age of nine where as he gave his first stage performance at the age of twelve. He soon won the hearts of many and as he grew up he not just mesmerized the adults but also brought the young generation closer to his amazing way of delivering kalaam.
The nation mourned over the great loss of Amjad Sabri but Coke studio season nine’s trailer in August revealed that there was still some magic to come. It looked promising and created a great feeling of joy among the public.
All the episodes of Coke studio were liked and enjoyed by music fans but all that waited for was the great tribute of Amjad Sabri. Everyone held their breath when the ‘Friday finale’ finally came and for the very last time everyone viewed Amjad Sabri spreading joy, love and peace with his charming voice. It soothed the atmosphere and froze everyone for a while. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Amjad Sabri worked together on a kalam named ‘rang’ which was traditionally performed by Ghulam Farid Sabri and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan many many years back. The kalaam itself was so powerful and captivating, but the two soulful voices took it to another level, doing complete justice with it.
The audience really enjoyed the performance with tears in their eyes. Everyone was out of words and all they could utter was ‘thank you coke studio’ for this last treat. Facebook page of coke studio received numerous comments of praise and love regarding this epic final performance.
Even people from across the border appreciated and loved the kalaam.
But, the fact that Amjad Sabri is no more with us broke everyone into pieces. Still, he will be remembered and his voice will echo in our hearts till we breathe our last.
