Yangon: At least 21 people including died after a boat capsized in waters off the coast of Rakhine state on Wednesday.
According to media details, the vessel was transporting around 60 passengers from a camp to a local market.
UN spokesperson on Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs confirmed that majority of people were Internally Displaced People (IDP’s) including nine children.
Rakhine state is home to many IDP camps housing thousands of ethnic Rohingya, a largely stateless Muslim minority living in apartheid-like conditions after communal violence tore through the region in 2012.
Tens of thousands have fled for neighbouring countries like Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
